PAVILION
Shepherds Bush Green, London W12

What was once the Pavilion Cinema stands bang next door to the more famous Shepherds Bush Empire theatre. Designed by Frank Verity, the Pavilion, opened in 1923, could seat 2,767 people. With a fine disregard for inflation (which, ironically, was galloping away in Germany at the time), someone arranged to have carved along the side of the building the message: CINEMATOGRAPH THEATRE CONTINUOUS PERFORMANCE SEATS 1/- 6d & 3d (5p, 2½p, and 1¼p), which message can still be seen today. In 1955 the cinema became a Gaumont and in 1962 an Odeon. In 1969 it was converted into a dual-purpose cinema-cum-bingo hall. The cinema section closed in 1983. Until a few years ago the exterior of the old projection box, with its external fire-escape ladder, could still be seen, but this has now disappeared.

Despite a certain amount of local opposition the building finally became the Walkabout, a so-called "Australasian bar", pictured above in 2003.
